Influencers get a bad rep for promoting brands that are often practicing poor business ethics because they are unwilling to compromise their financial payoffs for more eco-friendly decisions. Young influencers and celebrities, therefore, hint to the youth that they need to tirelessly consume new fashion trends as fast as they themselves are able to, pushing them into fast fashion’s deadly trap. In today’s media, being a sustainable shopper and wearing clothes bought off of resale sites or thrift markets makes you an unfairly lame person. Well I object! And it’s not just me whose rebelling against these uneducated standards, there is a slew of famous people that you already look up to who believe the same. Here are a few social media tycoons that are using their reach to promote better consumerism within the fashion realm:

Emma Chamberlain @emmachamberlain: YouTuber Emma Chamberlain has made quite the killing with her vlogs by simply being her goofy cofee loving self. Many of Emma’s vlogs involve her going through her thrift hauls or refashioning clothes in her closet that she no longer wears by giving them some classic arts and crafts love. Emma’s subscribers and Instagram followers love to see her strange style and are inspired to think outside of the box in their own fashion choices after seeing Emma’s styling challenges and posts. Emma also shops a lot on Depop, the resale app we talked about last time, scoring on lots of vintage gooides. The thing that I like most about Emma is that she’s worked with Louis Vuitton and now has a beautiful collection of handbags, yet she wears them with everyday pieces that she’s thrifted or crafted herself. I love her complex mix of high fashion pieces with bold graphics and prints that she’s bought second-hand because it gives her look more dimension and personality while mirroring how real people dress.

These awesome (or horrible) yellow jeans were painted by Emma herself and she paired the look with a limited edition Monet x Louis Vuitton collaboration bag.

Macy Eleni @blazedandglazed: Macy is a TikTok queen that is sharing all of her second-hand shopping tricks to her followers. Trust me, after about five of her videos, you’ll wish that you could be her. My personal favorite thing about Macy’s TikToks is that she is not only looking for gently used clothes but also for furniture to turn her new LA apartment into an 80s dream suite. Vintage is truly her love language and its about to be yours too. You can follow her all around So.Cal. as she goes from thrift stores to estate sales generously giving us her expert opinion on what items each stop is best for. Not only does Macy have the skinny on where to thrift, but she also reminds us that we need to treat ourselves from time to time and helps us keep a positive mental attitude. My favorite thing about her thrift hauls is how she chooses bold items, often designer, and is able to style them in a very chic way that models what LA influencers are currently wearing. Macy will make you run around the house yelling at your dog “get in queens” and, most importantly, never want to buy anything new let alone from a generic store again!

Maci is in a completely second-hand outfit. She thrifted her blazer and made a matching crop top out of it, pants are from Depop, purse and sunglasses are vintage designer from The RealReal.

If you enjoyed reading about these accounts, you can find many other influencers using their voices in a similar way in this article. Go hit all these girls with a like, follow, and subcribtion. See you next week my fast fashion killers!
